Share SKIN - Useless Children (Criminal IQ Records)
Melbourne’s Useless Children are a vicious ball of spite. I quite like them but I used to listen to the Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray” over breakfast each day. I remember going to see the Jesus and Mary Chain around the time of “Upside Down” when their sets were 20 minutes of feedback descending into a brawl. I like these Useless Children but they are not about to make many other punters happy.
The Useless Children wail and gnash their teeth whilst putting their guitars through a garbage disposal. It is an agreeable sound. I can’t really make out what they are upset about because the lyrics are buried in the racket. There is, however, a definite air of anguish and despair. I hope they are not just a bunch of art school wankers. I’d like to think of them as some kind of musical terrorist organisation (but that might just be an old man’s wistful thinking).
Still, I did enjoy this disc – and it was mercifully short. Billed as an EP, I thought three tracks really only qualified as a maxi-single - but what do I know. You couldn’t really call it any kind of a single because there is no real trace of a lead track or a-side. It sounds like a bunch of kids woke up and wanted to annoy the neighbours. They did so well that everyone in a three-block radius moved out. Good on them, I say. But even I couldn’t take an LP of this stuff. - Bob Short
