TRASH - Trash (self released)
Just two tracks on this and they're both winners. Trash is a band led by Rudolf Vee, who was bass player in seminal Perth punk band The Victims, along with the legendarily cool James Baker and Dave Flick (later to better known as Dave Faulkner in the Hoodoo Gurus.) Before that, Vee was in the never-got-out-of-the-garage Geeks (who were perhaps Perth's first punks), so his pedigree goes back.
Rudolf (and it IS Rudolf with an 'f'', according to communication from the man hisself, and not with a 'ph' as widely quoted) is living in Queensland and still active in music. "Trash" is the foreunner to a yet-to-be-recorded EP, slated for 2009 and possibly with James Baker on board, if Painkillers commitments permit.
"Black Annis" rides a measured tempo and a road of thick guitar from Vee, with Andrew Ganter on bass and their studio producer on drums. It's about a Welsh fairytale bogeyman and conveys an air of mild dread nicely.
The more up-tempo "Dead In My Head" is about depression and harks back to the trashy rock (Dolls, Alice and Lou) from whence the Victims took their lead. Short and bittersweet, it's does its business in less than a minute-and-a-half.
It's modest and even low key in its presentation but is well worth chasing down. And yes you can buy a copy by sending 10 well-hidden Australian dollars to PO BOX 3077 Palase Street, Maryborough Qld 4650. It's the same price for overseas but you better mail and ask about currency or a Paypal option first. - The Barman
