ROYAL PEACOCKS – Super Sexy Boy 1986 (Tornado Ride/Zodiac Killer Records)
Super Sexy Boy 1986 (c’mon stop laughing about the band name – let’s get serious for a moment) were a band that existed from 2003-09. Based in Vicenza, Italy, the band specialized in '60s mod-styled garage rock, but had some intense qualities that separated them from an overcrowded genre.
For instance, take the second track “Bed” which starts off with a fairly common riff and rhythm. As the song progresses, guitarists Jeky and Ale pile on the riffage and raunch. The next song “Metamorphosi” offers quick bursts of guitar and pounding drums courtesy of Madnuts (there you go again, can we stay serious about this review?) All of these great qualities offered by Super Sexy Boy 1986 come to full fruition on the tracks that follow.
“Lazy Girl” and “The News” are equally appealing, and at times remind me of either the Hoodoo Gurus or the Fleshtones in their approach to making hard-hitting pop. These two tracks are full of hooks, and plenty of raunch. On “The Boy”, Nicola’s vocals take on a Jagger-esque quality going from soft to screaming as he spits out the lyric “Tell me what’s a boy to do?” “Robots” speeds up the tempo with great overlapping rhythm and lead guitar, against a background of pounding drums and bass.
The bonus tracks on the CD are enhanced by a crisper production. “Paris Conspiracy” ends the it with crazed vocals, reminiscent of Jon Spencer, and wild, raucous playing by Jeky and Ale. It’s disappointing to read that the band has broken up. I would have loved to hear more from Super Sexy Boy 1986 (enough already, drop the jokes) and see how further the quintet would have developed their sound. After all, based on this CD the band was halfway to greateness and had a lot more awesome garage rock to offer. – Arthur S
