Share RECORDS TO RUIN ANY PARTY: VOODOO RHYTHM VOLUME 3 - Various Artists (Voodoo Rhythm)
When it's at the top of its game, Swiss label Voodoo Rhythm sweeps the garage floor with almost all the competition when it comes to lo-fi. Owner Beatman has a back-to-basics ethos that's rooted in the earliest roots of rock and roll. He's no so much a purist as an archeologist, however, and almost all the bands on his label share that trait. That's why the "Music To Ruin Any Party" samplers are always on the money.
There are 21 tracks on Volume 3 and they go back as far as The Monsters, the garage paint-stripper '60s band for Beatman's unique vocalising, one of the label's earliest signings, The Come N' Go, and the early big band soul days of King Khan. There's not one track longer than three minutes so if you hit a pothole in this rudimentary road, it's not long before something more to your tastes will be assaulting your ears.
Sampled and drum machine music usually never rows my boat but the marriage of blues and technology on King Automatic records are an exception. "Le Redresseur De Torts" is a great example of his arcane and crudely melodic tunes. Voodoo Rhythm is big on one-man bands and they're best represented here by King Automatic, Possessed By Paul James and Bob Log III. Urban Junior's techno-meets-punk track "Two Headed Demons" stands out like dog's balls in this company. It's turgid and best avoided but he does have more listenable stuff.
The Dead Brothers pander to fans of Gothic lounge music which is probably why I've never got them, but I gotta say that "The Power A Secret Holds" sounds like The Blackeyed Susans.That's a compliment. Andy Dale Petty plays too much banjo to entice me to listen to a whole album of him (the "Deliverance" soundtrack left deep scars) but your results may differ if you have more tolerance for that stuff
New Zealander Delaney Davidson's "Lackie's Men", on the other hand, sounds like "North To Alaska" on brown acid and you'd be advised to go searching for his music if that sounds like your thing. His last one was a surprise packet for me.
Pushed to play favourites, John Schooley's "Every Day Can Get You Down", "Jesus Christ Twist" by Reverend Beatman and "Hung, Drawn And Quartered" by Hipbone Slim And The Knee Tremblers are the pick and the bunch but dishonourable mentions must also go to the lo-fi blues of The Juke Joint Pimps, Movie Star Junkies and The Guilty Hearts.
Consider this an entry point if you're unfamiliar with the offerings on Voodoo Rhythm. The whole point of this album is that you should play it without undue concern for the tastes of others, especially if they're indie pop kids or too-cool hipsters.
