+ THE BELLRAYS
+ EDDY CURRENT SURPRESSION RING
The Corner Hotel, Melbourne
Friday August 4, 2006
Smoke-free. You beauty! BellRays rocked. Big girl, big hair, big attitude. What’s with the Wayne’s World’s look-alike (not Mike Meyers) and the tortured guitarist? Anyway, they kicked donkey, as I’ve taught my kids to say. Possibly the best support set I’ve ever seen, but I don’t get out much these days.
Birdman finally onstage at 11:45. Thrashed the new album to within an inch of its life. Nothing better than a local band promoting a new offering, and you’re a few feet away from the front man. Of course, the hazard is that the local species of Young-Males-Full-of –Piss takes over the front-and centre stage area and erupts in a frenzy of surging side-to-side every time one of the classics gets pulled out. That just adds to the fun, as you stick your arm out for protection and distance, and surf the wave.
Rob didn’t look pissed off with the crowd, the Keyboard Doc had no beret, Chrome Dome had some technical probs, the Tekman soldiered on, and Jim and Rusty just kept going through everything.
Great show, which was finished off by a killer version of “Search and Destroy”, hardly making up for the fact I didn’t make the BDO due to my sister-in-law’s wedding. Was the guy leaning on the stage with camera in hand , snapping and videoing everything, working for the Bar? - Paul Zarucky
